How it works
The standard mileage rate is 72.5¢ a mile from January 1 to June 30, 2026 and 76¢ from July 1. It covers gas, repairs, insurance and depreciation, so you can’t also deduct those for the same car. Business parking fees and tolls are deductible on top.
Driving between home and your regular place of work is commuting, not business mileage. Keep a log with the date, destination, purpose and miles of each trip.
For a car you own, you generally have to choose the standard rate in the first year you use the car for business. It’s an estimate to help you see the size of the numbers, not tax advice.
